Shotokan is a style i practised. it's very rigid and works on the basis heavy stances and powerful strikes and blocks and katas. The Kata's are profoundly excellent as they help develop your techniques, just one of the purposes of kata. Another purpose is to fight as if you are facing imaginary opponents to give you the confidence in applying the tecniques. But the real reason behind katas, are what masters truly know and i know too. but this secret is something you to learn yourself. A Famous actor who studied Shotokan is Jean Claude Van Damme. If any else out there would like to add anything on shotkan, please do so.

Yeah, that's all true...the real purpose of Shotokan karate is to avoid fightings...to go ahead in your life with umility and justice, and at the same time to be a strong and determinated person. The true meaning of empty hand is this...free your mind from every thought...and be in armony with yourself.
"True karate is this: that in daily life one's mind and body be trained and developed in a spirit of humility, and that in critical times, one be devoted utterly to the cause of justice." Master Gichin Funakoshi
What's your fav katas btw? So far mine are Empi and Heian Godan.

heian nedan was the 3rd one we learnt. Remember, im from the UK, so our syallabus maybe different to yours. We had white belt - which was basic gedan barai, and chudan punches. Then orange belt - which had gedan barai's, chudan's and knife hand blocks at the end. Then Red belt - which of course was the first to have kicks. I think your syallabus must be different. BTW just found out, Bolo yeung, the baddie in enter the dragon, bloodsport, and double impact, was actually a shotokan master too!
